Automatic wire ring production combines forming, end positioning and welding. A ring can look round while its joint is weak, or have an acceptable joint while the overall geometry prevents assembly. Inspection should therefore separate the ring dimensions from the weld condition. Set the acceptance requirements before the trial and keep the inspection method consistent across samples, operators and production shifts.
Start with the application drawing and the service requirement. Establish which joint features, ring dimensions and strength checks matter to the finished assembly. A decorative ring and a mechanically loaded ring may require different evidence. Avoid accepting a batch only because the joint looks smooth; appearance cannot establish all internal joint conditions or prove performance under load.
Identify the material grade, delivery condition, coating and batch. Record the wire diameter at the agreed measurement points. These details help explain why the same nominal program behaves differently with another coil. Measure the ring in its specified free or fixtured state. Compare diameters in more than one direction and record the measurement orientation. Check flatness on the agreed reference surface without forcing the ring down. Measuring two diameters is a useful screen for ovality but is not a substitute for a formal roundness measurement where the drawing requires one.
Use consistent lighting and magnification where needed. Inspect for visible cracks, pits, local thinning, misalignment and excessive flash. Examine the joint after any specified finishing process as well as before it. Discoloration alone does not establish weld strength. Photograph the same views for each retained sample, and compare them against approved acceptance examples rather than memory.
A bend test may reveal a weak joint, while a pull test may quantify performance in a specified fixture. The fixture, loading direction, rate and pass criteria must be agreed for the application. Do not improvise a hand test as a substitute for a required mechanical test. Destructive specimens should be identified, segregated and kept out of saleable production.
For resistance butt welding, record the approved current, time and force-related settings available on the machine. Review alarms and the conditions at the time of a failed sample. TIG uses a different process arrangement and should have its own record, including shielding conditions where applicable. Changes belong within a qualified setup procedure; more heat is not a universal remedy for a weak joint.
Inspect whether the ends meet in the intended position before welding. Burrs, contamination, a variable gap or movement in the clamps can affect the joint. Separate an end-positioning problem from a welding-setting problem by observing an approved setup cycle and inspecting unwelded samples where the equipment procedure allows. Isolate the machine before accessing tooling or clearing material.
Inspect the first approved pieces, samples from the established run and output following a material, tooling or parameter change. Increase attention after an interruption or a failed check. The sampling frequency depends on risk and the agreed quality plan; there is no universal interval. Identify the last accepted check so suspect production can be contained if a later sample fails.
Joint offset calls for investigation of end location and gripping. Repeated pits or unstable appearance justify checking surface condition and process consistency. Distortion near the joint should prompt review of geometry before and after welding. Treat each observation as a lead, then verify it through controlled checks. Record the rejected quantity and the corrective action, not just a photograph of the best ring.
